For Her
In an echo of AW20, autumn/winter 21 is seeing denim for him take on a laid-back aesthetic with regular cuts continuing to win out over previously favoured super-tight skinnies. Welcome news (no doubt) to anyone who’s embraced the working-from-home wardrobe of joggers and altheisurewear, and is feeling unenthusiastic about swapping stretch for structure.
Opt for wide-legged or A-line jeans from the likes of Levi's and Guess, staying clear of black, grey and dark blue dyes, which are taking a backseat for her this season.
Double denim is also in style but coordination is the number one rule if you’re going to attempt it. Stick to matching colours, top and bottom, and stay clear of clashing shades. A denim jacket (a key transitional item) is a brilliant way to channel this look, but only if you can find a matching jean in the exact same dye. Start your search at M&S Outlet and Tommy Hilfiger who can always be relied upon for a great selection of denim separates in the latest shapes and colours.
For Him
Where curve-hugging jeans once reigned supreme we’re seeing denim get bigger and bolder for AW21 with loose fits and high-rise waists from the likes of Levi's and Paul Smith claiming their place in her wardrobe this season. It’s a movement championed across the womenswear runways, with once essential skinny cuts being unanimously sidestepped in favour of baggy and roomier shapes.
Super stretch skinnies aren’t the only denim diversion she’ll want to take this season. Traditional blues, blacks and greys are also being dialled back in favour of statement-making colours - a stark contrast to the washed-out jeans that set the precedent in 2020. Powerful primary colours as seen at Tommy Hilfiger and Ted Baker are what you want to aim for. Think Routemaster red, Marigold yellow and cactus green, the only golden rule: the brighter, the better.
If you are going to buck the trend for colour and keep to classic denim shades stick to lighter blues over darker dyes. Leather look denim finishes are another strong trend coming through for Autumn/Winter 21. Guess and M&S Outlet are great places to seek these out but remember to shy away from styles that are overtly tailored. Like women’s workwear, denim is relaxed for AW21 so opt for oversized styles you can shake a leg in.
