Before the lights go up and the music starts to boom, there’s only one place to be, and that’s backstage. A whirlwind of stylists, make-up artists and hair stylists spring into action to prep and preen each model, while film crews and reporters frenetically capture all the action. Our MFW correspondent, Giulia Valentina had exclusive backstage access to all the inside scoop from some of the most talked about designers and faces, including Marco Rambaldi, who shared the story behind his latest collection.

Blumarine

True to the Italian house’s signature style, Blumarine’s collection was imbued with a sense of hyperfeminity and romanticism born from its DNA. From mini skirts to suiting, each piece was given a jolt of high octane glamour, from smatterings of feathers and sequins to glittering rose embroidery. The go-to collection for luxe eveningwear, texture was key; from billowing chiffon to patent leather, lace and tulle. Of its return to its roots, founder Signora Anna Molinari said "This collection is my Blumarine: There's everything I've always liked."

Genny

High-octane glamour and romanticism were the theme for the Milan-based label’s AW19 collection, with suiting reimagined in fluind fabrics, maxi dresses adorned with feathers and elegant head-to-toe hooded knit dresses. Silhouettes were elongated and emphasised with floor-sweeping cuts, in a colour palette of icy whites and silver to rose red. MGInsider Giulia Valentina spotted Baywatch actress Alexdra Daddario both on the FROW and backstage in an elegant black cocktail dress toughened up with a blazer.

Iceberg

Bringing a dose of British punk to the luxury Italian house, Creative Director James Long delved into the Iceberg archives for AW19, channelling bold and beautiful 80s prints with a rockstar edge. Notably influenced by skiwear, the collection heroed jumpsuits, puffed jackets, turtlenecks and chunky boots in a defined colour palette of white, pink, blue and black, accented with emphatic logo print detailing. Fun, fresh and full of attitude, accessories were key; from statement ski goggles to chunky lace-up boots.

Marco Rambaldi

Paying homage to feminist photographer Marcella Campagnano’s 1976 collection, "Roles", Rambaldi's AW19 collection explored the roles society has imposed on women to this day through bold colour palettes, rich textured knitwear and statement prints. A knitted and belted cardigan spelled out the different characters in Campagnano's work: signora, signorina, feminista, libertina, diva, while skirts and bell bottoms were reimagined with photo collage designs. For his Milan Fashion Week debut, it's certain that there was nothing Rambaldi wasn't afraid to say.
