STYLE ON SCREEN

With Ryan Kay, Fashion, Brand Consultant and Celebrity Stylist

For years, our sartorial choices have been inspired by the looks seen on our TV screens, whether on Sex and The City, Normal People or Emily in Paris, as well as the upcoming Barbie movie, which is expected to crown pink as the Colour of Summer 2023. Although these trends may feel tricky to integrate into your everyday life without buying into fast fashion, they are not as inaccessible as they may seem.

The easiest way to tap into these trends is by looking at what you already have in your existing wardrobe, then either adding simple accessories or trying out new layering techniques with pieces you already own to create a bold and fashionable look. Here are a few of my top tips which will inspire you to embrace your inner Carrie this summer!

THE EDIT

1. To get the Barbie look, I love pairing different shades of pink – why not have a look at the items in your wardrobe and see if you can build a look worthy of Margot Robbie? You might not think that your different pinks work together, but they really do! This tip can also be extended to choosing accessories within the same tonal family. A bag and shoes that complement each other like this will help the outfit feel pulled together and deliberate.

2. Don’t wear a trend if it doesn’t work with your own personal style, try and integrate them together! I love taking looks that I love on the catwalk or on-screen and get inspired on how this can work with pieces that I already own! For example, silver jeans are so on trend at the moment, as they can add a really cool edge to a classic look like a blazer. They also work perfectly with a slouchy jumper and trainers.

3. Don’t be worried about being bold! When Carrie wore a tulle skirt, it made a huge impact, but it is actually such an easy and versatile piece. For example, try one with a fun Y2K inspired t-shirt or a super sharp tailored black blazer and heels to even out your proportions.

4. By contrasting textures, even simple outfits can look more premium and interesting. For example, a pair of structured trousers look great with a slouchy jumper, or a satin skirt looks fantastic with a crisp white shirt. However, if you are mixing textures, stick within a neutral colour palette. Too many colours and textures will look like you got dressed in the dark.

5. Layering is fantastic for maximising your wardrobe. Versatile pieces can be worn in many ways, making your investment work harder for you as you’re essentially building multiple outfits with only a few key pieces. Some of my favourite ways to add dimension to outfits is by layering a crop top over a shirt to create some structure. Alternatively, you can wear a dress underneath a skirt to create a different silhouette.

6. The perfect investment piece of a bag is one that you can wear day-in, day-out. Try styling this piece in different ways to keep it interesting – for example, you can add a scarf around the handle of a bag to integrate it into the look, rather than appearing like an add on.
