The Champagne's Grands Lacs, consisting of 4 reservoirs, have become a real tourist destination with a remarkable and protected biodiversity.
These reservoirs are artificial and were created to minimise flooding in Paris during the 20th century, particularly following the major flooding of the Seine in 1910. The Lac d'Orient, commissioned in 1966, is entirely devoted to swimming and sailing. Motorised activities are practised on Lake Amance, which is one of the two bodies of water forming the Aube reservoir lakes with Lake du Temple. The most important lake is Lac du Der, which was opened in 1974 and is fed by the Marne. With its 4,800 hectares, it is the largest artificial lake in Europe.
Within the Grands Lacs de Champagne, the fauna and flora are remarkable. More than 250 species of birds have already been recorded, including 130 species that breed in the area.

Lac du Temple

The Lac du Temple, is a true haven of peace that will delight nature lovers. Being today the largest lake-reservoir in Europe without nautical equipment with nearly 2000 hectares of calm water, as well as classified largely as a "National Nature Reserve", it is surrounded by unspoiled nature which gives it the title of kingdom of fishing and small sails.
