The sunset at the wattensee in St. Peter-Ording

Coastline magic

Savor the sea breeze

Chalk cliffs, kilometers of dunes and picturesque harbors are one of the trademarks of Germany’s Schleswig Holstein. Nestled between the North- and Baltic Seas, you can hike, relax, shop and eat close to the water. We created a travel guide that covers the best coastal spots around.

The main entrance of Designer Outlet Neumünster

The best shops in Schleswig Holstein

One of the most special advantages of Schleswig Holstein is that it’s home to a designer shopper’s paradise. It’s the city of Neumunster - located right in the heart of the region - that attracts many tourists with its unique Designer Outlet. What better way to kick off your weekend than with a shopping session? Stroll in the cozy alleys, grab a Starbucks coffee and shop over 130 brands with up to 70% discount on the regular retail price. Your must-haves for a successful weekend at the Schleswig Holstein coast? A swim suit, sunglasses, comfortable sneakers and an evening outfit. Now you and your family are 100% ready to go.

Sunset at the restaurant Salt & Silver at the Wattensee

Chasing beaches and sunsets at the Wattensee

Drive about one and a half hours further to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Wattensee. This part of Schleswig Holstein holds a unique coastal ecosystem that stretches along the northern coast of Germany, as well as Denmark and The Netherlands. We’ll guide you to one of our preferred spots along the Wattensee. Welcome to… Sankt-Peter-Ording! This city treats you to a bunch of walking or cycling routes, tasty restaurants and - if you’re lucky - even seals.

Check-in at the trendy Urban Nature hotel in Sankt-Peter-Ording. The name says it al: it’s urban enough for ones looking for a lively atmosphere, and nature enthusiasts are just a short walk away from the quietness. A perfect place to unwind. Be sure to book one of their spa treatments, or join a yoga class. We love the versatile possibilities at this place, for young and old. After some relaxation or a walk on the beach, head to restaurant Salt & Silver am Meer. This is one of the coziest restaurants around, with a view to die for. Try to come right before sunset time and witness the sun setting in the sea whilst enjoying a freshly grilled piece of fish. This is what we call the perfect holiday feeling!

Zantopps Fährhaus located on the beach in Kiel.

Chalk cliff hiking and picturesque harbors

There’s something special about cliffs. They make you feel small and add a dramatic touch to the scenery. That is exactly what you're going to witness this morning. Leave the Wattensee behind and drive to Schwedeneck Steilkuste for a hike. What a way to wake up! We suggest to walk on the beach - easy for kids as well - and look up towards the chalk cliffs for the most spectacular views. Afterwards, get back in your car to drive to the laid-back harbor village Kiel. Take a stroll in the city center and have breakfast in the coolest restaurant in town: Brunswick. Be sure to order a homemade lemonade next to your bagel, salad or sandwich.

The true magic of Kiel is the coastal area around it. Just a short drive away, you’ll find a bunch of beaches. Our top pick? Mönkeberg! This is the place to be for sandy beaches and views on sailing boats. While you’re there, grab lunch at Zanntops Fährhaus. For those feeling active: there’s even a forest walking trail that starts right next to the beach. Perfect to stretch your legs.

The Plöner Schloss with the surrounding city and lakes.

Hidden gem Plön and its lakes

The final stop of this seaside weekend in Schleswig-Holstein is the city of Plön and its surrounding lakes. Plön is the destination for water sports, fishing or boating. If you’d rather stay out of the water though, the city and region around it offer numerous picturesque walking routes. That is because the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park is so nearby. You can even spot wildlife here!

One of the other main attractions is the historical Plön Castle (Plöner Schloss), a renaissance-style castle which was built in the 17th century. This castle is easily accessible via the charming historical center of Plön, which deserves a spot on your Schleswig Holstein must do list as well. It feels like stepping back in time here. We can’t think of a better place to reflect back on a weekend were lifelong memories were made. See you next time?
